Transforming 'How Was Your Day?' into Positive Exchanges to Strengthen Parent-Child Relationships

As a hypnotherapist experienced in supporting adolescent mental health, I often hear from parents frustrated by the unenthusiastic responses they receive when asking their children about their day.

A simple "how was your day?" is met with a monosyllabic "okay" or a grunt and a roll of the eyes. If this sounds familiar, rest assured, you're not alone in this challenge!

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have more meaningful conversations with your child? To truly understand their daily experiences, challenges, and victories? To strengthen your bond with them and help them feel understood and supported?

The key lies in the way you frame your question.

Instead of the generic "how was your day?", try asking, "what’s been good about your day

This simple shift in phrasing directs their focus to the positive aspects of their day. It encourages them to think more deeply about their experiences, engaging the intelligent and executive functioning part of their brain.

When you prompt your child to reflect on the positives, you're not just fostering a more enriching conversation—you're also triggering the release of serotonin, dopamine, and other positive brain chemicals. This makes the interaction a positive experience for both of you, enhancing your connection and their overall well-being.

Next time you sit down with your child, try this approach. You may be pleasantly surprised by the insights you gain and the quality of the conversation that follows.

By transforming a routine question into an opportunity for positivity and connection, you're helping to create a supportive environment where your child feels valued and understood.

With experience in addressing various challenges faced by children and teens such as anxiety, depression, exam stress, self-harm, low self-esteem, and more, I am here to support you. If you or your child need assistance in any of these areas, please don't hesitate to reach out.
